Symptoms of Factor XIII Deficiency

This XIII factor deficiency can raise the problems of re-bleeding by incorrect cross-linking of fibrin, which helps in blood clotting. This bleeding is the same like hemophilia. This is why, factor XIII deficiency is also called as fibrin stabilizing factor deficiency. This is the rarest of all the factor deficiencies that are known. Like others, this is also an inherited autosomal recessive deficiency that means both men and women are affected equally.

There are two different sex chromosomes named X and Y. A female gets one X chromosome from the mother and another X chromosome from the father (XX). A male gets an X chromosome from the mother and Y chromosome from the father (XY). The gene causing hemophilia is present on the X chromosome.

A child with hemophilia generally has various other male relatives suffering from hemophilia. Many times, babies are born with hemophilia in a family that has no trait of hemophilia. This happens when the gene is “hidden”, this means that the gene is transferred but does not affect the male offspring. After years and years, it becomes active and the person gets infected. A baby can be infected in many ways. The possibilities for infections are: a non carrier girl, a disease carrier girl, boy infected with hemophilia, boy non-infected with hemophilia. A pregnant woman who is infected with the disease has only twenty-five% chances of having an infected son. The father’s X chromosome tells that there will be a girl child, so every daughter of a hemophilic infected man will be the carrier of the disease. The sons are not hemophilic. A proper genetic counseling helps a lot to avoid such diseases.

Symptoms of Factor XIII Deficiencies

Factor XIII is a deficiency, which is rare that happens when there is deficiency of fibrin. The main symptom of all factor deficiencies is bleeding. However, the way of bleeding differs. Some of the symptoms are described as follows:
  •     Bleeding is unstable due to the absence of factor XIII in the body. Severe bleeding can lead to trauma.
  •     As the fibrin is not placed perfectly, a person can have re-bleeding problems. Re-bleeding can pose a problem for a person with internal injury, especially injury to head
  •     If any woman suffers from this disease and if it goes untreated, then they can face problems during pregnancy. Either they have severe bleeding after pregnancy or even they can have abortion due to severe internal bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy itself.
  •     Men with Factor XIII deficiency can face problems of infertility.
  •     Some of the other common problems that are seen in every person suffering from this disease are joint bleeding, soft tissue bleeds, menorrhagia, and constant bleeding through circumcision or at the place of the umbilical cord.
  •     A woman with this disease can have improper menstrual cycle.

Factor XIII deficiency can be treated like other factor deficiencies. Some of the options are frozen plasma. Other option for this is genetic replacement of the faulty gene on X chromosome. Abnormal blood clotting should not be taken normally as this becomes severe as time passes. This situation can be fatal as well because a person can have severe unstoppable bleeding if he undergoes surgery. A proper genetic counseling will help a lot to avoid such problems in child if parents are affected by factor XIII.

Factor XII Deficiency Causes Symptoms and Treatments

This is a rare disease and generally happens to one in millions. This genetic disorder is autosomal recessive in nature and affects both women and men. In this disease, the protein that is required to produce fibrin is either missing or is present in fewer amount. Factor XII actually concentrates on how the protein helps in the formation of a clot. People with this deficiency generally do not experience bleeding while undergoing any treatment or surgeries and thus no treatment is required. A low factor XII generally has no medical significance.

A person with this deficiency has no bleeding in major surgeries like genital surgeries etc. In fact, most of the individuals are diagnosed with this deficiency during pre-testing of blood tests before any surgery.

Causes of Factor XII Deficiency

The causes of deficiency of factor XII are unique, for that onee must know the bleeding and clotting process. When bleeding happens, the body initiates a series of reactions that aids the blood clotting process. This series of reaction is termed as coagulation cascade. This process includes special proteins known as coagulation factors. Factor XII is one of the coagulation factors. Each factor in this chain triggers the other reaction and the final product that one gets by this coagulation cascade is the blood clot. Shortage of factor XII restricts bleeding. Hence, blood clot occurs but slowly. This disease is a rare inherited condition and is not fatal.

Symptoms and Treatments

This is not a big medical issue hence generally patient suffering from this disease does not show many symptoms. In addition, since the disease does not harm any body functions, treatment of factor XII is also not necessary. It generally heals by itself.

Diagnostic Tests for Factor XII Deficiency

Diagnosis is made by extended activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) test. Factor XII deficiency is detected when blood-clotting examinations are performed for routine testing.

Factor XII Assay: In this test, the blood is drawn from a vein, generally present inside the elbow or in the back portion of the hand. The portion is cleaned with the help of medical antiseptics, to maintain necessary hygiene while testing. An elastic wrapper is draped around the upper arm for the pressure to build up and to produce swelling in the vein. After this, the medical practitioner softly injects a needle in the swollen vein. The blood is collected in an airtight tube that is attached with the inserted needle. Then the elastic band is removed. After the blood is collected, then the needle is also removed and the punctured site is covered to stop excessive bleeding.  In case of young children, a pointed tool called lancet can be used to pierce in the skin to make the area bleed. In this case, blood is collected in a small glass tube called pipette, or on slides for testing. A medicated bandage can be used to cover the pierced place to stop the bleeding process.

Partial thromboplastin time (PTT): In this process, a medical practitioner uses needle to take blood from the vein. The blood is collected in an airtight bottle. A bandage is used to cover the bleeding place.

Factor XII deficiency is not a big problem and does not affect any body functions. There is no treatment available, as medical field does not consider it as a dangerous condition unlike other  hemic disorders.

Vitamin B6 Deficiency Symptoms Causes and Sources of Food

Vitamin B6 deficiency is not so common nutritional deficiencies as it is very commonly found in various food items. However, when the food items are excessively processed the vitamin content is lost to a certain level or even completely. Vitamin B6 deficiency can damage immunity, cause skin inflammation, and mental confusion. Three forms in which this vitamin is found is pyridoxal, pyridoxine, and pyridoxamine. Vitamin B6 is required by the body to produce heme, which carries oxygen in the blood. An insignificant deficiency may occur in people with alcohol abuse, or kidney failure. Vitamin B6 is found in ample quantity in meat poultry, cereals fortified with vitamin B6, bananas etc.

Symptoms of Vitamin B6 deficiency:

The symptoms to detect a person’s deficiency of vitamin B6 are difficult as it may include various symptoms, which are common for other diseases as well. However, there are certain symptoms of vitamin B6 deficiency, which include:

    Pellagra or dermatitis
Vitamin B6 is important to control the depression so its deficiency may cause depression and even a disease by the name of pyroluria leading to schizophrenia.
  •     Anxiety
  •     Water retention
  •     Paranoia
  •     Rapid weight gain or loss
  •     Problems with metabolizing sugar
  •     Sore tongue
  •     Skin disorders including inflammation
  •     Insomnia
  •     Lack of sex drive
As the vitamin is related to the functioning of red blood cells, its deficiency may lead to causing anemia.

Causes of vitamin B6 deficiency:

There is a rare possibility of an adult developing the deficiency of this vitamin due to its availability is in abundance via varied food items. However, an infant may experience the deficiency due to seizure, or born metabolism disorders. Some of the common reasons of vitamin B6 deficiency in adults are as follows:
  •     Poor-nutrient or imbalanced diet may cause the deficiency
  •     Long-term drug or alcohol abuse contributes to the vitamin deficiency
  •     If the diet does not have a variety for a prolonged time, it also may contribute to a person being vitamin B6 deficient.
  •     A high protein diet
  •     Prolonged medications of hydralazine, isoniazid, or penicillamine
  •     Consumption of oral contraceptive pills may lead to vitamin B6 deficiency

Food sources to overcome the Vitamin B6 deficiency:

Vitamin B6
shares the food sources with other Vitamin B sub types. It is found in ample amount in a variety of food items that is easily accessible for a common man. Whole grains, nuts, brown rice, bananas, carrots, soybeans, poultry, eggs, pork, fish etc are some of the common sources. According to the recommended daily Allowance [RDA] the vitamin B6 requirement for an adult woman is 1.6 mg compared to 2 gm required for an adult man.

Treatment of vitamin B6 deficiency:

Although, it is rare to spot vitamin B6 deficiency, however if at all it occurs, then there are simple and easy measures to treat the deficiency. Nevertheless, it is always better to treat the cause of the deficiency rather than treating the deficiency only. There are oral supplements available in the market for the vitamin. It may be taken in a 10-20 mg oral tablet form. For those who have inborn deficiency of the vitamin may take up to 600 mg daily.

Vitamin B6 is required for the regular functionality of the nervous system. It is also very important to control the mood swings, prevent the kidney stones and help built a strong immune system. Vitamin B6 deficiency can be prevented by a proper balanced diet and if required by the oral supplements available in the market.

How To Treat Iron Deficiency Anemia and Risk Factor

Deficiency of erythropiotin (red Blood Cell) is Calld Anemia.
Iron is present in the hemoglobin in red blood cells. Apart from this, nearly 30 percent of iron is stored as hemosiderin and ferritin in the bone marrow, liver and spleen. This deficiency of iron in the body makes the person lethargic and drowsy. If the severity of iron deficiency increases than many times body ache increases. This iron deficiency can be due to many reasons like low iron rich diet, pregnancy, gastrointestinal problems etc. Hence, a proper care is required. Many treatments for iron deficiency anemia are there and hence this blood disorder can be treated easily.

Treatments for Iron Deficiency Anemia

Since this anemia happens due to the deficiency of iron in the body, treatment can be done by replenishing the level of iron in the body. Some of the treatment options are described as under:

Iron Rich Diet: Consuming iron rich food is one of the best options to meet the daily need of iron in the body. Body does not have the power to store surplus iron consumed, hence a specific amount of iron is needed every day. Consuming foods such as green leafy vegetable, meat, legumes, fish, poultry, rice, cereals etc. help a lot to meet the iron necessity. That is why it is said – “a balanced diet is the best way to be healthy”. Many times, the need of iron in the body increases as per the condition of the body, say for example during pregnancy the need of the body increases. The loss of iron makes the blood more diluted.
Iron supplements: If a person has any kind of wound, which has resulted into iron deficiency, then iron supplements are the best alternatives. They must be taken under the strict supervision of the doctors. In addition, they are prescribed to women during pregnancy as the need of iron increases suddenly.
Vitamin C: This vitamin helps in proper absorption of iron in the body. Some of the food that helps in replenishing the level of this vitamin is strawberries, kiwi, oranges, green pepper, grapefruit, tomato and their juices etc.
Blood transfusion: During severe iron deficiency, blood transfusion is one of the best options to treat the person. However, this is a short term treatment option hence must be given in regular intervals.

Risk Factors Involved

Some of the risk factors after the treatment are:

Iron Supplements: Some of the iron supplements can be allergic in certain individuals. Some of the side effects are dark stools, stomach irritation and even heartburn.
Blood transfusion: The level of iron increases in the body that may harm organs like liver, heart etc.

The treatments for iron deficiency anemia can replenish the iron levels easily. The other options are injecting iron in the skin or the iron shots and transfusion iron through IV (intravenous) tube in the vein. These therapies have to done under proper medical care, so that an individual stays free from infections. The treatment not only depends on the need of iron in the body but also on the age of an individual. Iron need cannot be denied as it is required for the generation of healthy red blood cells in the body. This anemia is more common in women than in men. A doctor is the best person to prescribe the amount of iron that is needed.

The Most Common Symptom of Vitamin A Deficiency

Symptoms of Vitamin A deficiency

Vitamin A deficit is commonly seen in the developing countries. The Vitamin A deficit hampers the health of skin, eyes, and hair. However, it may further affect the immune system, and also result in appetite loss, and growth retardation. Following are the symptoms of vitamin A deficiency:

The most common symptom of vitamin A deficiency
is related to the eye. A person may have pain in the eyes, eye inflammation dry eyes or a blurred vision. The major symptom is to adjust in the dark, which may lead to night blindness.
Hyperkeratosis is another symptom. This is caused due to excessive production of skin-protein with the name keratin. This excessive production blocks hair follicles. It initially affects the thighs and forearms skin. Further it may affect the whole body.
Vitamin A deficit may affect the hair. One with a deficiency may experience hair loss or abnormal growth of skin, hair, fine hair, dry hair or dandruff.
The vitamin A deficiency also impairs the immune system. People with inadequate intake of vitamin A in the body are more likely to fall ill and susceptible to infections.
Deficiency of Retinol may also result in bad nail health. The person with VAD may have thick or brittle nails.
VAD symptoms also affect the normal growth rate of the body. The younger the children may be, the higher the impact is. It may further result in mortality rate go higher with severe Vitamin A deficiency.

How do Preventing selective IgA deficiency

Preventing selective IgA deficiency or IgA deficiency is not possible. The reason for this is that, it cannot be detected till 6 months of age. In addition, the neonatal or prenatal detectionof this deficiency is not known.

Selective IgA or IgA deficiency is one of the milder forms of immunodeficiency disease. Since the disease is not common so the outcomes are generally not predictable. The prediction in IgA deficiency depends on the various problems associated with the disease. If any of the symptoms are seen then diagnosis is done to confirm IgA or selective IgA deficiency. This is also helpful in figuring out whether the deficiency is severe or mild. IgA deficiency treatment can help a lot to reduce the problems associated with the problems.
