Teething issue(Dental Care) in Young Children Essential Steps is Necessary

The joy of motherhood comes with the jolts of health issues with babies.
One of` the frequent concerns of young mothers is teething, which is an essential part of pre-school pains. There are many misconceptions related to teething in children, awareness of which can assure mothers a trouble-free teething period.

Teething in children usually occurs between six to 24 months, while permanent teeth replace their younger mates in six to 12 years. As the teeth fight their way out of the gums, the child may suffer from increased dribbling, irritation, tendency to put fingers or objects in mouth, gum swelling and discomfort, decreased sleep or food intake and mild rash around the mouth. Tender gums can be soothed by massaging them with a clean finger or a piece of cold cloth, using a teether and offering hard foods to babies such as carrot. It is important to understand that these problems as well as cough, cold and rashes over the body are not related to teething. They occur secondary to concurrent infection elsewhere in the body, for which a paediatrician`s help may be sought.

It has sometimes been observed that parents do not care much about the oral health of toddlers. However, teeth are prone to caries right after their eruption and particularly once complimentary feeding begins. The reasons can vary from consumption of sweetened drinks, the child going to bed with the bottle, dipping pacifiers in honey/sweeteners, inadequate tluoride intake, using feeding bottle as a pacif`ier or transf`er of mother`s oral bacteria to baby through saliva. Drinks capable of causing caries include not only juices and soft drinks but also mother`s milk, formula milk and cow milk.Appropriate oral care of the child can prevent dental caries, tooth decay and other dental problems in childhood.

After every feed, the child`s gums must be cleaned with a clean wet piece of cloth. When teeth appear, they should be brushed twice a day with a baby toothbrush and water. When the child can be trusted not to swallow but spit out the toothpaste (usually after two years), small amount of fluoridated toothpaste can be used to clean the teeth twice a day. Children usually need help in brushing till the age of six to eight years, after which they can reliably do it on their own.

Limiting the exposure to milk and other drinks to the time of feeding, avoiding exchanging spoons between the child and mother, encouraging the child to drink from a cup after he/she is a year old and establishing healthy dietary habits, will all contribute to promoting oral health in children.

Many children develop the habit of thumb/finger/lip sucking and pushing at the newly formed teeth with their tongue. Although quite common, if continued beyond five years of age this can affect the alignment of the permanent teeth and create problems in proper pronunciation of words. Most children quit these habits on their own.

However, if they continue beyond the age of three or four, help should besought. Deal with the child with love and care, addressing any stress that they might be facing, positive reinforcement in the form of appreciation and gifts on discontinuing these habits and keeping them busy in activities that keep their hands busy will gradually help children get rid of them.

Early loss of milk teeth can sometimes occur naturally or after a dental injury or tooth decay. With extra space available, the nearby teeth can shift towards the empty side and trouble the emergence of permanent teeth later on, making them misaligned and creating problems in chewing. For this reason, premature loss of teeth should be followed by a visit to a dentist.

Weaning Diet Nutrients and Breast Feeding Essantial for Babies

Pediatricians recommend that a child should be breast l`ed exclusively for the first six months of his life. After this age, babies need additional nutrients that can be provided by gradually introducing solid l`oods. This transition from breast milk to solid food is termed weaning.

New mothers are ol`ten apprehensive about when to start weaning; some may be cager to do it early while some may want to postpone it for some time, though certain factors such as if the mother is working or is not in good health to continue l`eeding or isnot producing enough milk and if the child appears malnourished are always favourable to gradually start weaning early.

It`s better to consult a doctor before starting weaning, so he can give guidance regarding proper l`ood and timing. It`s not the mother alone who should decide when to start weaning. There aresome indications on the side of the child that prompt a mother to start weaning, such as the baby can sit or prop up, can hold the neck, shows interest in food, start putting things in mouth, etc.

It`s not easy to convince the baby to start eating but things can be made easier. For instance, before offering the food to the child make sure that the baby is comfortable, either hold him in the lap or make him sit in a secured chair. Then offer him/her a small amount about a teaspoon of the food that has been prepared for him. Food given at the initial stage such as rice based cereal should be thin inconsistency and made from formula milk. If the baby rejects the food there`s no reason to feel despair.

Wait for a minute or try giving something else.

Babies usually take time to develop acceptance towards the new mechanism of feeding, therefore one should never give up.

The beginning of weaning does not mean that thebaby should not be breast fed. Breast feeding should ideally continue till two years of age along with the food that is being given to the baby, though its frequency decreases as the child grows and takes more solid food.

Though the baby gets nutrition from the food that he is eating, he/she misses the mother`s warmth.

Thus, the baby should be hugged and loved to meet his/her emotional needs.

Like the time to start weaning, what to feed the child is another burning issue for new mothers. Rice based cereals should be introduced to the baby at the start of weaning. Do not start with wheat cereal or mixed cereals; these should be given to the baby at a later stage to reduce chances of allergic reactions. Once the baby starts eating cereal olT a spoon, introduce a fruit or vegetable.

After introducing a new food, wait for a few days before introducing something else, so that you would know if any food causes an allergic reaction.

Mashed fruits and vegetables such as carrot, broecoli, stewed apple, banana and pear are rich in vitamins and should be given around the age of six months.

In addition, mashed beef or chicken, pasteurised cheese, bread, pasta and yoghurt should also be included in the baby`s diet. In contrast peanuts, unpasteurised dairy products, raw eggs and food items with added sugar and salt should be avoided.

However, honey, eggs, cow`s milk, citrus fruits can be given to the baby after his/her first birthday.

Moreover, nuts, seafood and peanut butter are allergenic and must not be given until the child is two or three years of age.

Bitter-gourd (MomanLica charantia Linn.),an important member of the tucurbitaceae
family, is a vegetable known . It is widely cultivated in the Asian,South American and African countries. Some of the well-known koreta-growing countries are China, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, etc. The plant thrives in hot and humid climates, in sandy to sandy-loamy soils. Its fruit and leaves are used in various cuisines and are also used in medicine, especially to keep blood and urine sugar within permissible limits in diabetics.
Bitter-gourd is cooked in many ways, most popularly with minced meat, gram pulse or
stuffed with a generous amount of onions,garlic, green chillies, aniseed, cumin, caraway, coriander and other spices. It is also used to make pickles. Bitter-gourd juice helps reduce body toxins and blood disorders like boils and itching due to toxaemic conditions.

which moves the food along the digestive tract — and helps in dyspepsia,
dysentery and constipation. It is anti-malarial,anthelmintic, purgatory, emetic and antirheumatic. Laboratory tests have indicated bitter-gourd can combat HIV infections, cancer,improve diabetes, toxaemic conditions and blood disorders, but these. claims have yet to be confirmed in human beings.
In the Philippines, a food supplement has been prepared for diabetics under the trade name of 'Charantin', which is also exported to some countries. It is suggested that if 'bitterness is an impediment in popularising bittergourd as a cure, the recommended dose can be put in gelatine capsules and swallowed in one go without its bitterness coming to surface.
Despite its benefits excessive use of bittergourd should be avoided as it can cause toxic
effects such as mild abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Two ounces of hitter-gourd or two
bitter-gourd a day will suffice.
Expectant mothers, especially in advanced stage of pregnancy, should be careful with their intake of bitter-gourd powder or its extract as it may cause mild abdominal pains or diarrhoea or lead to premature birth. Diabetics should consult their doctor instead of reliance on mere hearsay about the usefulness of hitter-gourd or its fresh juice in normalising blood sugar.Diabetes is spreading like wild fire and there is urgent need to develop new anti-diabetic drugs that are effective, cheap and in digenous for a diabetic to live a healthy, happy and tension-free life.

Let`s start by being honest.When there are so many scrumptious foods one can cat, how can we restrict ourselves to a `no carb` diet plan? However, losing weight remains on our to-do list.

A good way of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and burning of  the extra calo-rics are aerobic exercises. As the name says, these exercises aim at oxygenising the body and work towards healthier heart and lungs and regulating weight. Acrobic exercises increase the intake of oxygen by the body through rhythmic and fast paced movements including stretches. When Multiple Sclerosis Attacks
In multiple sclerosis, an agent such as a virus or foreign antigen, in theory, may alter or interact with the immune system so that the immune system perceives myelin as an intruder and attacks it. Inflammation occurs and causes myelin to disappear. Consequently, the electrical impulses that travel along the nerves decelerate, that is, become slower. In addition, the nerves themselves are damaged. While some of the myelin may be repaired after the assault, some of the nerves are stripped of their myelin covering (become demyelinated). Scarring also occurs, and material is deposited into the scars and forms plaques. As more and more nerves are affected, a person experiences a progressive interference with functions that are controlled by the nervous system such as vision, speech, walking, writing, and memory.

What Are the Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis?
Symptoms of multiple sclerosis may be single or multiple and may range from mild to severe in intensity and short to long in duration. These include:

How Is Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosed?
Due to the broad range and subtleties of symptoms, multiple sclerosis may not be diagnosed for months to years after the onset of symptoms. Physicians, particularly neurologists, take detailed histories and perform complete physical and neurological examinations.

  • Collectively, these three tests help the physician in confirming the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. For a definite diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, dissemination in time (at least two separate symptomatic events or changes on MRI over time) and in anatomical space (at least two separate locations within the central nervous system, which can be demonstrated by MRI or neurological exam) is usually required. Most physicians consult a neurologist to help obtain the definitive diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

How Is Multiple Sclerosis Treated?
There are many issues for the patient and physician to consider in treating multiple sclerosis. Goals may include:
improving the speed of recovery from attacks (treatment with steroid drugs);
reducing the number of attacks or the number of MRI lesions; or
attempting to slow progression of the disease (treatment with disease modifying drugs or DMDs).
An additional goal is relief from complications due to the loss of function of affected organs (treatment with drugs aimed at specific symptoms).

Once goals have been set, initial therapy may include medications to manage attacks, symptoms, or both. An understanding of the potential side effects of drugs is critical for the patient because sometimes side effects alone deter patients from drug therapy. Patients may choose to avoid drugs altogether or choose an alternative drug that may offer relief with fewer side effects. A continuous dialogue between the patient and physician about the medications is important in determining the needs for treatment.
Drugs known to affect the immune system have become the primary focus for managing multiple sclerosis. Initially, corticosteroids, such as prednisone (Deltasone, Liquid Pred, Orasone, Prednicen-M) or methylprednisolone (Medrol, Depo-Medrol), were widely used. However, since their effect on the immune system is non-specific (general) and they may cause numerous side effects, corticosteroids now tend to be used to manage only severe multiple sclerosis attacks (that is, attacks leading to physical disability or causing pain).
