Doses & Administrations:
ADULT DOSE: HERPES ZOSTER: 1 gm tid x 7 days HERPES SIMPLEX - 1st EPISODE: 500 mg bid x 5 days and up to 10 HERP.SIMPLEX - Immunocompromized: 500 mg bid CMV PREVENTION (Post renal transplant: 2 gm qid x 90 days with in 72 hours of tranplantation HERPES SIMPLEX - recurrent : 500 mg bid x 5 days HERPES SIMPLEX - suppression: 500 mg daily as bid or qd " " Immunocoto start with in 72 hours ..... CHILDREN: NOT RECOMMENDED ... Preferable
Contra Indications:
hypersensitivity to valacyclovir or acyclovir products
Precautions:
thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura/hemolytic uremic syndrome (some cases resulting in death) has been reported in patients with advanced HIV disease and in allogeneic bone marrow transplant and renal transplant recipients receiving doses of 8 grams/day efficacy not established for the treatment of disseminated herpes zoster or in immunocompromised patients except for chronic suppressive therapy of genital herpes in HIV-infected patients with CD4 cell counts of 100 cells/mm(3) or greater
