Vitamin B3 ( Niacin ) Deficiency Symptoms Causes and Sources

Niacin is involved in converting carbohydrates into glucose. Hence, it is understood that the main function of this vitamin is related to the energy generation of the body. Another major function of this vitamin is to metabolize fats and proteins. Hence, it helps in better blood circulation in the arteries and prevents the formation of plaque in the artery walls.     Poverty may be one of the reasons. This is because if it is unaffordable for a person to include meat as it is non-affordably expensive for a poor person. Meat organ like heart and liver are rich in vitamin B3.
    In case a person follows a restrictive or vegan diet, it may result in deficiency of niacin. Such people must include other substitutes so as to manage the dietary intake of vitamin B3 in the required quantity.
    Alcohol abuse is a common cause resulting in deficiency of niacin. Alcoholism restricts the absorption of the vitamin B3 in the body.
    A diet majorly comprised of maize and corn also causes deficiency of niacin

Sources of Vitamin B3:

It is very easy to intake vitamin B3 or niacin through a proper diet and food items. Majorly, niacin is found in animal food than any vegetables or fruits. The natural food items, which are rich in niacin, are meat, fish, nuts, and cow milk. People who follow a vegetarian diet may seek  vitamin B3 from nuts and vegetables like broccoli. It is present in avocados, tomatoes, dates, and carrots. It is equally important to intake tryptophan, which synthesizes the niacin in the human body. Eggs and cheese are rich in tryptophan. There are several countries where the cereals and breads are fortified with vitamin B3.

Treatments and precautions for the niacin deficiency:

To treat or prevent niacin deficiency, one has to follow a diet rich with vitamin B3. It may also be taken through supplements. While following a vitamin B3 rich diet, make sure to include good protein in it to get adequate quantity of amino acids like tryptophan, which is required to synthesize the niacin in body.

Niacin is very important for children and pregnant women who need extra energy than others. Hence, they should take extra care to maintain the niacin amount to the required level. Deficiency of vitamin B3 may cause various serious consequences, it is always better to prevent it at an early stage or else it may also lead to death in rare cases.
