Sickle Cell Anemia Symptoms Causes and Treatment

sickle Cell Anemia is Relted to anemia bracnch in which anemia the normal red blood cell covered in sickle in shape
The normal cells can travel easily in the blood vessels but the sickle cells find it difficult to travel smoothly. They are stuck in the blood vessels, and thus they block the flow of blood. The red blood cells carry hemoglobin, and iron-rich proteins, which gives red color to the blood. The main function of hemoglobin is to transfer oxygen to all body parts. The absence of this hemoglobin is the main reason for this sickle shape of the cells. These sticky and stiff cells generally form lump and cause blood clumping.

Symptoms of Sickle Cell Anemia

The symptoms of the sickle cell anemia vary a lot.

Problem in breathing: Sickle cell anemic person will find difficulty in breathing, which in turn increases the heart rate and increases several risk factors related to heart
Dizziness: Since the organs are deprived of sufficient amount of oxygen, the person may feel tired easily. Pain in the lower legs is one of the very common symptoms in adults, as the joints are deprived of oxygen
Headaches: Insufficient oxygen supply to the head makes the central nerves to over work  and hence frequent headache and mild fever persists
Pale Skin: Since the amount of oxygen in the skin cells is very less, the skin looks more tired and restless as the skin cells damage easily

Causes of Sickle Cell Anemia
Sickle cell anemia can be due to inheritance. The child can be sickle cell anemic if and only if both mother and father are diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. In rare cases, even if one parent is sickle cell anemic, the child can contract the disease. The hemoglobin of the people with this type of anemia has one normal gene and one defective gene. This produces both type of hemoglobin in the body. This autosomal recessive inheritance travels from generation to generation. This cannot be contracted by touching a person, who has sickle cells anemia.

Treatment of Sickle Cell Anemia

Blood Transfusion: When the anemic conditions are severe, blood transfusion can be a very good option. This option is for the patients who have complications like pneumonia, late pregnancy, lung problems, severe leg ulcers etc. However, there are many risks involved in blood transfusion; some of them are hepatitis, blood infections, injury to body tissues due to the increase in the number of iron in the body
Splenectomy: In sickle cell anemia, the spleen is enlarged because of the continuous  flow of impaired blood cells. The sudden congestion of blood anywhere in the body can be very problematic as it develops shocks in body that can be life-threatening
Bone Marrow transplantation: This is one of the good options for treating sickle cell anemia. Bone marrow helps in production of healthy RBCs. The treatment is very useful but requires a donor, whose cells are closely matching with the patient, but this can be  life-threatening

Sickle cell anemia is a problem that is inherited from the parents. The treatments are available but there is no surety that the disease can be cured. This anemia is surrounded by many complications. But due to the treatments that are available, patients are able to manage to live for up to forty years or more.
