Prophylactic Use of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Before Vaccination to Prevent Fever in Children

Vaccination or immunization is the administration of antigenic material of disease causing microorganisms to stimulate the body immunity. Vaccines have traditionally being used for a long time and are considered as a good preventive strategy against the infectious diseases. Some of the vaccines routinely used can cause fever or rise in body temperature. Fever is part of the normal inflammatory process after immunization. There have been practices and school of thoughts which argued on giving Paracetamol/Acetaminophen (Tylenol) prophylactically. Recently, study published in Lancet showed that prophylactic administration of acetaminophen (paracetamol) to reduce fever or febrile convulsions after vaccination in infants actually results in reduced immunogenicity and should not be routinely recommended. The study implied that the prophylactic use of acetaminophen in children to prevent the fever can result in decreased antibody response to the vaccine. This can cause the impaired immunity or reduced effectiveness of the vaccine.
