Type Of Lung Cancer
The classification of lung cancer includes the following
Small cell carcinoma: This is also called as oat cell carcinoma.
Squamous cell carcinoma: This is the cancer of the layered, squamous epithelium of the lungs or the bronchi
Adenocarcinoma: This is the cancer of the glandular tissue or a type of cancer in which the tumor cells form recognizable patterns.
Large cell carcinoma: This type of lung cancer is composed of large sized cells that are Anaplastic in nature and often arise in the bronchi
Broncho alveolar carcinoma
Mixed and undifferentiated pulmonary carcinomas
On the basis of treatment, the lung cancer is separated into the following types.
Small cell lung carcinoma
This is also called as SCLC. Small cell lung carcinoma is wide spread at the time of the diagnosis and therefore there is a limitation of treating this carcinoma. This is usually treated by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
Small cell lung carcinoma accounts for approximately 20% of all primary lung cancer. Small lung cancer is more aggressive and compared to non small lung cancer and spreads sooner to the distant organs. Small cell lung cancer is inclined to be more responsive to chemotherapy and chest radiotherapy.
Non small lung cancer
Non small cell lung carcinoma is also called as NSCLC. This type of lung cancer comprises of squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma. Adeno means gland. A malignant tumor that is found in epithelial tissue specifically in a gland is called as adenocarcinoma. These are usually found on the outer edges of the lungs and may occur and present themselves as solitary nodules, masses or scar cancer. These can be misdiagnosed as pneumonia i.e. inflammation of the lungs, atelectasis i.e. collapsed lung or pit like masses.
Broncho alveolar carcinoma
This is one of the rarest types of the lung cancer. It is also known as BAC. The cancer in this type is developed in the alveolar airways of the lung cancer. Though the treatment in early diagnosis can be effective but usually this type of lung cancer does not carry good prognosis.
Large cell lung carcinoma
This is also called as LCLC. This is a heterogeneous group of undifferentiated malignant neoplasm originating from the epithelial cells of the lungs which are transformed. Patients suffering from this type of lung cancer have pathological weight loss and non productive cough.
Mesothelioma
This is a very rare type of lung cancer that affects the layers of the lung. It is caused due to the exposure to the asbestos.
Secondary lung cancer
In this comes the cancer that has metastasized in the lung. This means that the origin of the cancer is somewhere else in the body but it has spread to the lungs. The treatment of the lung cancer in this case will be entirely different. it will be according to the origin of the cancer. For example if the cancer of the breast s spread in lungs, while treating lung cancer, the treatment of breast cancer will be given.
All the types of lung cancer mentioned above are standard types of classification worldwide. The treatment and the prognosis varies in each of the type of lung cancer.
