Metastatic Lung Cancer Treatment

Any cancer can spread anywhere but the most common cancers that spread to lungs are the breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer and the bladder cancer. Sometimes though rarely, the primary site of the cancer is difficult to diagnose. In this case, the metastases cancer is treated as the primary cancer.

Symptoms
  •     Chest pain

Treatment

Surgery

Surgery for lung cancer can be curative, if the spread is localized and is diagnosed in the early stages. The location of the tumor also affects the decision of surgery. The age of the patient, the age of the disease and overall health condition of the patient is also to be seen before deciding on the option of surgery.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses different drugs and combination of drugs to kill the malignant cells in the body. It is given intravenously. The drug, dosage and the number of sessions of chemotherapy are different in each person according to the age, sex and other aspects like weight of the patient.

Radiation therapy

This therapy uses high energy X-Rays and other types of radiations to kill the cancer cells. There are two types of radiation therapy. There are two methods of giving radiation therapy. These are called as external radiation therapy and internal radiation therapy. External radiation therapy is the process in which the machine is outside the body and radiations are sent to the affected part. Internal radiation therapy uses a radioactive material conserved in needles, wires, catheters that are placed near or in the affected area. The types of the radiation therapy depend on the stage and the prognosis.

Side effects

Radiation therapy

    Fatigue: Radiation therapy is tiring for patients. The fatigue can be so much that it can hamper the daily activities. In that case, help from others is useful. Taking short naps also helps.
    Skin problems: The part of the skin that has been given the radiation therapy may appear reddish, burnt and tanned. The skin becomes sensitive. The patient is supposed to take special care of that part. Ask your doctor for creams and gels, which can be applied to reduce the irritation.
    Loss of appetite: Loss of appetite is a very common symptom of radiation therapy. Even though, the patient does not feel like eating, the nutrition should not be compromised in any case. Loss of immunity can fetch many infections and can be fatal.
    Hemoglobin: Decrease in hemoglobin can occur. The patient is given heavy iron doses. Platelet counts can also be reduced, which can cause unexplained and uncontrolled bleeding.

  •     Dry skin, rashes
  •     Fatigue, nausea, vomiting
  •     Constipation, diarrhea
  •     Muscle and nerve problems

  •     Physical restrictions
The side effects mentioned above are easily and totally manageable. There is nothing to get scared of these. The treatment will differ for every patient according to the factors of age, sex and spread of the disease.
