Viral Gastroenteritis in Infants Symptoms Dignosis Treatment and Preventing

Children are more susceptible to viral infection as compared to adults. All the viruses that cause gastritis can cause infection in children, but the most common type of virus that causes infection in case of children is rotavirus. Norovirus is the common cause of infection in case of children of school going age. In gastroenteritis, usually infection is caused to the intestine. This can lead to vomiting and diarrhea, which causes dehydration.

These viruses are mostly found in contaminated food and water. These viruses usually show their effects after 4 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus. Children who have a poor immune system are highly susceptible to such viral infections. Viruses other than rotavirus and noroviruses, which cause infection in the intestine in children, are adenovirus and astrovirus. Some of the common symptoms shown in infants due to infection are as follows.

The main reason why the below symptoms and excessive water loss occurs in case of viral gastroenteritis is the damage caused to the mucus lining of the intestine by the infection of these viruses.
  •     Abdominal pain and cramping
  •     Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
  •     This causes huge amount of water loss from the body and disturbs the electrolytic balance of the body
  •     Blood in the stool and outflow of the watery stool
  •     Weight loss
  •     Muscle pain and feeling weakness
  •     Poor feeding
  •     Loss of appetite
  •     Water loss from the body also causes dryness of the skin and mucus membrane
  •     Fever and chills are also observed
  •     Sunken soft spots on the fontanels of the infants head
  •     Sunken eyes due to excessive loss of water from the body and there is also inability in producing tears
  •     The child may also be unable to generate tears in severe cases
  •     The amount of urine production may also fall considerably
  •     Blood pressure also falls and the child may suffer from headache
  •     Stiffness in the joints is also observed
  •     In very rare cases, you may also observe blood in vomiting

Diagnostic tests for viral gastroenteritis in infants/babies:

Above symptoms can be used as an indication of viral gastritis in children, but most of the times some other diseases may co-exist with viral gastroenteritis and then it becomes difficult to diagnose the disease. In such cases, you will have to conduct some clinical tests. Stool of the child in examined in the laboratory to identify the type of virus causing infection as some of the viruses are much contagious as compared to some other forms.

Treatment for viral gastroenteritis in infants/babies:
  •     Viral gastroenteritis in children is treated by hydrating the child properly. For this you have to increase the amount of fluid intake in the child
  •     Fluids should be given to them in small proportions after every 30 to 45 minutes
  •     If the child is suffering from nausea, he/she may be given fluids through IV ( intra venous)
  •     Never give fruit juices to your child as they contain sugar in abundance, which can worsen the situation
  •     You can feed your child with breast milk during the treatment, it will not cause any adverse effects on your child
  •     They should be offered food in small quantities according to their ability to digest and eat
  •     Never give them food or fluids in excessive amount at one time, this can cause vomiting
  •     Medications to stop diarrhea and vomiting may also be given to the child by the doctors
  •     In severe cases, you may need to hospitalize your child

Preventing viral gastroenteritis in infants is always better because even if the disease is treated, it takes too much time to make your child healthy again as there is weight loss due to diarrhea. Mothers and people who are in close contact with the child may also become infected easily, so they should take necessary precautions while handling their child. You should also monitor the number of wet diapers of your child changed, such that you will get an idea of the severity of the disease. Make sure that you do not give any anti-diarrheal medications to your child unless the doctor prescribes them.

Tips to Used Preventive measures for gastritis

There are certain preventions of gastritis, which need to be followed.
  •     Avoid stress, tension and worries as a stress free life is very comfortable
  •     Have proper and a balanced meal consisting of fruits, vegetables, and cereals pulses
  •     Give proper gap between meals
  •     Have dinner at least one to two hours before going to bed
  •     Butter milk is also an affective remedy for treating gastritis
  •     Drink plenty of water but not with the meal as it can delay the digestion process
  •     Make a habit of eating food slowly and chew your food properly
  •     You can have skimmed milk preparations like yoghurt and cottage cheese
  •     Avoid consumption of spices, tea, coffee and alcohol, sour foods, pickles and fried foods
  •     Follow the doctor’s recommendation if there is a rise any complications
  •     Breathing and some light exercises like walking, cycling and yoga is recommended by the doctor to give your heart, lungs and gut a workout.
  •     The advantage of exercise is that it helps the food to move within your intestine quickly for proper digestion.

Prevention of gastritis is very important for the people suffering for this disorder. Most of the people recover from gastritis. It is not a difficult task anymore. There are several types of precautionary measures and therapies available in the market. The treatment depends upon the severity of the patients. If gastritis is diagnosed at an early stage, then it becomes easy to treat. Depending upon the factors of gastritis, the symptoms of gastritis may flare up and down. Skin dryness during pregnancy

Most of the women face the problem of dry skin in pregnancy. The skin becomes dry due to the loss of body fluids. The body of a pregnant woman needs more fluid than normal. The baby in the womb needs more fluids to develop and grow. Therefore, a pregnant woman has to take more fluids than the normal diet. In addition, the hormonal changes during pregnancy lead to the problem of dry itchy skin.

Dry skin and itchy bumps in pregnancy

Normally, people feel itchy especially around the belly and that is just because of the growing size of belly. The same thing happens with the breasts also. Many pregnant women complain that their feet and palms become red and itchy sometimes. The reason for this is the increase in the level of estrogen.

Not all but some women complain of having itchy bumps while pregnant. The reason for this is pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) also known as polymorphic eruption of pregnancy. This generally begins in the last months of pregnancy and is more common in the women carrying twins. The eruption occurs first in the abdomen, in or around the stretch marks. Later it may spread to the buttocks, arms or thighs. However, it is harmless but it is very annoying hence, a prescribed ointment will help you.

Preventive methods for dry skin in pregnancy

The dry skin during pregnancy can be avoided easily. As we avoid the dry skin, the itchiness also vanishes. Some of the tips are:

  •     Apply hot water bath as far as possible. The water used must be lukewarm. Do not forget to apply the moisturizing lotions generously over the body and that too several times in a day.
  •     If your skin is very dry, use bath oil to moisturize your skin. Apply the moisturizer when the skin is damp.
  •     Try to note down the things of which you have allergies. In addition, ask you doctor to prescribe some lotions as the itchiness during pregnancy is very annoying.

The dry skin during pregnancy is common with all the pregnant women. The problem arises only if proper care is not being taken.  Always keep yourself hydrated, as this will help to keep you as well as your baby healthy. If any signs of dry skin arise, consult your doctor and get yourself checked. The dry skin itch is not a major problem but can be very annoying.
