About Esophagitis inflammation of the esophagus

Esophagitis is inflammation of the esophagus and is a non-congenital condition. Esophagitis can be caused by certain medications or by infections.  It  can also be caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd), a condition where the esophageal sphincter allows the acidic contents of the stomach to move back up into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux disease can be treated with medications, but it can also be corrected by changing what you eat.

Symptoms of Esophagitis
  •     Nausea
  •     Vomiting
  •     Stomach pain
  •     Regurgitation of saliva (water brash)
  •     Decreased appetite
  •     Heartburn (acid reflux)
  •     Oral lesions (herpes)
  •     Difficulty swallowing((dysphagia)
  •     Painful swallowing

Causes and Risk Factor of Esophagitis
Esophagitis is most commonly caused by acid reflux, which is the upward movement of gastric fluids from the
stomach to the esophagus. Your risk of acid reflux is increased by obesity, alcohol or tobacco use, hiatal hernia (protrusion of the stomach into the chest), or frequent vomiting. Different types of infections, including herpes virus and Candida infections, may also lead to esophagitis.
The following increase your risk of esophagitis:
  •    Alcohol use
  •    Cigarette smoking
  •    Surgery or radiation to the chest (for example, treatment for lung cancer)
  •    Taking certain medications without plenty of water especially alendronate, tetracycline, doxycycline,   and vitamin C
  •    Vomiting
Esophageal infection may be due to fungi, yeast (especially Candida infections), or viruses such as herpes or
cytomegalovirus.

Dignosis of Esophagitis
  • Upper endoscopy
  • Upper GI series or barium swallow
Treatment of Esophagitis
Treatment depends on the specific cause. Reflux disease may require medications to reduce acid. Infections will require antibiotics.
