Ectopic Pregnancy Brief Symptoms Causes Dignosis and Treatment

Ectopic Pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg or zygote doesn't travel into the uterus, but instead grows rapidly in the fallopian tube. Women with this condition can develop severe abdominal pain and should see a doctor because surgery may be necessary.

Brief Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy
Abdominal or pelvic pain, A missed period, Signs of early pregnancy, Vaginal bleeding not caused by menstruation, Dizziness or fainting, Low blood pressure when bleeding is severe

Causes of Ectopic Pregnancy
  •   Previous fallopian tube surgery

  •   Abnormality of the fallopian tubes

  •   Endometriosis

  •   Infection such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, PID, which is associated with Sexually Transmitted Infections

  • such as Chlamydia and gonorrhoea

  •   Women who are using progesterone only contraceptives are also at slightly increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Dignosis of Ectopic Pregnancy
A pregnancy test is done first. If positive, an ultrasound is performed to look for a pregnancy within
the uterus(the womb). If no pregnancy is seen on ultrasound, further tests may be necessary to diagnose an ectopicpregnancy. If a pregnancy is found outside of the uterus on ultrasound, the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is made and treatment is started.
Diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy can often be made with a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin
tube with a light and camera on the end that is inserted into an small incision made in the abdomen. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide so that the organs can be viewed easier. The surgeon can then inspect the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and abdominal cavity to find the location of the pregnancy. As well, using a laparoscope can facilitate removal of the pregnancy when if one is located.

Treatment of Ectopic Pregnancy

Treatment of an ectopic will vary depending on the time of diagnosis and also on the location of the fetus.
If theembryo is still very small, medication is usually the way to go.A drug called methotrexate is administered.Thisdrug is given through injection directly into a muscle. It then travels through the blood stream into theplacenta. This kills the cells of the placenta and the embryo is reabsorbed into the body. This form of terminationdoes not damage the tubes as others might.A blood test is usually needed to confirm that the pregnancy has been ended.
