Thyroid eye disease is usually caused due to the over production of the thyroid hormones due to over productive thyroid glands. Thyroid eye disease is however, different from the thyroid disease. Also, it is not necessary for the all the thyroid people to experience thyroid eye disease. Thyroid eye disease symptoms may be recurrent and occur in varying degree of severity. Thyroid eye disease is more likely to affect women than men. Usually women in their 30s experience the symptoms related to thyroid eye disease. However, even men and children are reported to have this disease. This disease can be diagnosed by doctors due to its characteristic eye signs. The treatment for these symptoms is simple and rarely needs a surgery.
Thyroid Eye Disease Symptoms:
Many times, the symptoms related to Graves’ disease may appear as soon as the thyroid gland becomes overactive. The presentation of the symptoms may be prior to the detection of hyperthyroidism. However, the symptoms may be inactive for months or even years from the over production of thyroid glands. Following are the most commonly observed symptoms related to Graves’ disease:
Sore Eyes – The most common symptom of thyroid eye disease is the sore and gritty eyes. Usually, one eye is affected more than the other. However, both the eyes may have the same effect too.
Protrusion of the eyeballs – This is also known as proptosis. In this situation, the eyes become curved towards the outward direction. Protrusion generally affects only one eyeball or it may present in both the eyes. Around 70-90% people with thyroid eye disease may complain about this symptom. Protrusion may be caused due to the collection of fats and inflammation in the tissues behind the eyes. Proptosis may even lead to cornea ulcer due to increased exposure of cornea. Due to proptosis, a person may find it difficult to close the eyes while sleeping or blink as usual.
Inflammation or irritation of eyes – Inflammation of the eye tissues may occur in thyroid eye disease. Even swelling of the eyes or the tissues surrounding it may appear significant in the disease.
Startled look – The swelling in the orbital tissues, cause the muscles in the eyelids tighten and stretch the gap between the upper eyelid and lower eyelid. This makes the person eyes to have ‘staring’ look, where white area surrounding the pupil appears more.
Swelling of conjunctiva – The thin layer covering the white area of the eye is called the conjunctiva. Thyroid disease may cause redness and swelling to appear in the conjunctiva. Eyes may appear bloodshot.
Double vision – The muscles, which control the movements of eyes may increase as a result of swelling and thus further to the problem of double vision. Usually, it is difficult to associate this symptom with the thyroid eye disease, as the symptom is common to other eye related disorders.
Dryness and excessive tearing – As the disease causes eyes to bulge and furthers to overexposure and difficulty in closing the eyelids, it may lead to inflammation and dryness of the eyes. This further leads to excessive tearing as a reaction to lubricate the eyes.
Apart from the above given thyroid eye disease symptoms, there may be a few other symptoms like decreased sharpness of vision, abnormal color vision, pressure and pain in the eyes and discomfort in the eyes. As said earlier, thyroid eye disease is a disease resulting due to the dysfunction of thyroid gland. This is an autoimmune disease. This disease usually termed as Graves’ disease may lead to the condition known as Graves’ opthamopathy. The treatment for the symptoms of the disease is dependent on the severity of the symptoms and verification of the thyroid levels.
