Thrombophilia Types Causes and Symptoms

Thrombophilia is a disease that leads to the problem of blood coagulation. This can be treated easily with the help of medicines, surgeries, genetic therapies etc. If the disease is too chronic then it can be suppressed easily. A person must take medication as per the doctor’s prescription. Some of the common drugs that are generally prescribed as warfarin and heparin. Heparin is also available in the form of injection and it is chosen over warfarin to treat pregnant women. The treatment of this blood disorder must be done under strict medical supervision. Women must undergo proper and regular tests during pregnancy to avoid severe consequences later.

Thrombophilia is also termed as hypercoagulability. This disease is related to blood clot problems. Generally, people with thrombophilia either have an overload of proteins that cause the blood to clot or too few proteins working as anti-clotting agents. It may be due to a genetic disorder, such as the Factor V Leiden mutation. It may also be acquired or caused by another factor, such as pregnancy, cancer, pharmaceutical drugs, obesity, or other illnesses. People around the globe are affected by this disorder, and although it may be treated, there is no cure for it.

Types of Thrombophilia

The two main types of thrombophilia are given as follows:

Inherited thrombophilia: The inherited are also called as genetic thrombophilia or the thrombophilia that is passed on from parents to off springs. This causes abnormal blood clot in the body. The main reason behind this problem is the faulty gene during the mutation process. The syndrome that is present in blood due to inheritance is called as “thrombosis”, a kind of blood clot. These blood clots occur due to absence or less quantity of protein called as factor V in the body. The inherited thrombosis can be chronic or mild depending on the loss of factor V.
Acquired Thrombophilia: Thrombophilia that is not inherited are called as acquired ones. In such type of thrombophilia, the genes are normal but there is some other underlying cause. Generally, the reason becomes clearer during adulthood. It may happens as a side effect of some other disease or can be due to deficiency of certain proteins. Even heavy medication and weak immune system can be one of the reasons.

Causes of thrombophilia

Some of the causes of thrombophilia are given as follows:

Thrombophilia can be either congenital or acquired. The congenital factors happen by birth of the person due to the faulty gene in the body.
Drugs: Many times, overdose of certain drugs affects the body metabolism. The thickening of the blood gives rise to blood clot problems.
Immune System: A weaker immune system can be one of the reasons for thrombophilia. The weaker immune system affects the blood circulation process.

Symptoms of Thrombophilia

Some of the symptoms of thrombophilia are given as follows:

Blood clots: They are the main symptoms of thrombophilia. Acute deep venous thrombosis or acute DVT, presence of blood clot in large veins and acute PE that is presence of blood clot in the arteries are the two main ways of presence of blood clots. If blood clots are present in the arteries then they can travel easily to the lungs and the heart.
  •     Thickening of blood that leads to improper blood circulation in the body
  •     Sudden loss of blood flow in lower limbs or legs
  •     Minor heart attacks
  •     Delay in blood clotting process
  •     Chances of severe internal bleeding during childbirth
  •     Stillbirth or retarded growth of the brain also shows that a woman is thromphilic
