Pernicious anemia is also known as Biermer’s Anemia or Addison’s Anemia or Addison-Biemer Anemia. This anemia is one of the types of megaloblastic anemia. This is caused by the loss of the gastric parietal cells, which leads to the loss of vitamin B12. Hence, it is said that pernicious anemia is caused due to the loss of vitamin B12 in the body. The autoimmune destruction of the gastric parietal cells leads to the problems in the intrinsic factor (IF). The absorption of vitamin B12 depends on the IF and hence normally we say that this anemia is caused by the loss of vitamin B12. In this kind of anemia, the immature, large and nucleated blood cells called as megaloblasts circulate in the blood but will not carry out the function of transferring the oxygen to the tissues.
Symptoms of Pernicious Anemia
Some of the common symptoms of anemia are:
Treatment of Pernicious Anemia
As described above in this article, the main cause of this problem in the loss of vitamin B12 in the body. The loss of vitamin B12 leads to anemia and neurological problems. The treatments for this problem are:
Vitamin B12 Shots
Since this anemia is caused by the inadequate amount of vitamin B12, the treatment lies in replenishing the level of vitamin B12. The shots of vitamin B12 help the pernicious anemic patient. The shots are prescribed as per the need of the body. Once the normal level of vitamin B12 is attained, the frequency of these shots can be can be reduced.
Blood transfusion
If the anemic patient is not in a position to take the vitamin shots, then the other option is to give blood transfusion. The blood has to be transfused very slowly as the heart may not be in a position to tackle the blood overload.
Medication
If the condition is mild, then this anemia can be treated even by giving the vitamin B12 supplements. These supplements must be taken as per the doctor’s prescription.
Pernicious anemia is one of the risky anemic health conditions that can happen due to loss of stomach cells that result into the IF. This vitamin helps in making the healthy RBC in the body and also keeps the nervous system healthy. If proper care and treatment are not taken, they can cause a permanent damage to the nerves.
Symptoms of Pernicious Anemia
Some of the common symptoms of anemia are:
- Fatigue, short breath, depression rapid heart rate and low blood pressure
- Weakening of muscles of hands and legs, thus inability to do the daily chores
- High frequency of diarrhea and jaundice due to impaired formation of RBC
- Changes in personality and loss of memory
- Difficulty in reciprocating, mild cognitive problems, which lead to difficulty in concentrating and lethargic responses
- Swelling and redness of the tongue called as glossitis
- Can be affected with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
