The glucose in the body is obtained from the digestion of starchy foods such as the wheat, bread and rice. The glucose then, with the help of the hormone named insulin, produced by your pancreas, enters the cell from where it is used as a fuel for your body. Glucose is the form of energy in the body.
During pregnancy there is increased demand of the vitamins, proteins, calcium, carbohydrates. During this phase if you are suffering from diabetes then it can have dangerous consequences as mainly your glucose or sugar content in the diet will be cut down to an extreme level. Diabetes during pregnancy can put you and your baby at risk but these risks can be minimized. The minimization of the diabetes depends upon the type of diabetes you have. Three types of diabetes have been observed that can cause harm to you and your baby.
1. This is the diabetes which starts in childhood because your body cannot produce insulin. A woman having this form of diabetes would be familiar with it since childhood and it would not be caused by pregnancy. The diabetes can be controlled by taking insulin.
2. The second type of the diabetes develops when you can’t produce enough insulin or the amount of insulin produced doesn’t work properly. It is often observed in the overweight or obese people. It is also diagnosed in the women aged 40 years or more. These days it is also observed that it takes place at a younger age around 25 years. You may be aware of the diabetes before you become pregnant or you might be diagnosed of the diabetes during pregnancy. This kind of diabetes can be treated with the tablets and insulin to lower blood glucose.
3. Gestational Diabetes: Gestational diabetes as the name suggests appears only in the term of pregnancy. You can be prone to the second type of diabetes if you have the gestational diabetes during pregnancy. It can occur at any time during the term of pregnancy, but is generally seen to happen during the second half of the pregnancy. It is mainly caused due to the inability of the body to meet the extra needs for insulin during pregnancy. The body is unable to produce the extra insulin during the term of pregnancy. Gestational diabetes tapers off after you have given birth.
Pre existing diabetes: If you already have diabetes of the first or the second type you may be at a higher risk of having a larger baby and thus could be at risk for a difficult delivery or cesarean, or even a miscarriage. Sometimes there might be a problem with the eyes like diabetic retinopathy or the kidneys like diabetic nephropathy. Since you are at this risk so is your baby. The baby is at a risk of suffering from the congenital abnormalities, especially heart abnormalities, still birth or dying soon after birth, health problems immediately after the birth, breathing problems, developing obesity or diabetes in the later life.
The best solution to this problem is to control the diabetes before you become pregnant. You will be offered a blood test called an HbA1c test which helps to assess the level of glucose in your blood. It is best to score less than 6.1% but if it is more than that like 6.5 % then it is better to control before you conceive in order to reduce the complications for you and your baby. Taking folic acid during pregnancy can reduce your babies from developing birth defects like spina bifida. Diabetic women require a higher dose of folic acid. Your diabetic treatment may be adjusted according to the conditions related to your diabetes.
