About Multiple sclerosis (MS) and Types of multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated progressive demyelinating disease of the CNS. Demyelination refers to the destruction of myelin, the fatty and protein material that surrounds certain nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord; it results in impaired transmission of nerve impulses. Multiple sclerosis (MS) typically presents in young adults ages 20 to 40, and it affects women more frequently than men (Boyden, 2000).

Types of multiple sclerosis

Benign multiple sclerosis (MS)- Benign multiple sclerosis is one of the confusing type that misleads the disease, since it show little or no progression after the initial attack. Statistics show that if the symptoms show 20% of the people affected, then after some time it shows only 5% of the people affected.
The people suffering from this type of disease may experience complication such as short-term memory loss. This can be clearly seen in the MRI examination.
Relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) – It is the most common type of the disease. The type can also be misleading, as patients tend to experience an attack or a series of attacks followed by complete or partial remission. Patients usually think that the remission stage of the disease means that there is 100% recovery. But this is not true. This may be true in the initial stage of the disease, but the recovery can be a partial one at the later stage of diagnosis. It will leave some permanent symptoms behind.
Secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) – It is referred as the second stage disease, which is chronic in nature. There are no real periods of remission in this type of multiple sclerosis, but only breaks in attack during the period. There is no real recovery from symptoms, although it is a chronic case.
Primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) – Primary progressive multiple sclerosis is very common in men, as it is characterized by gradual clinical decline with no distinct periods of remission. Although, this is also a minor disease, but it leaves some of the symptoms behind it.
Progressive relapsing multiple sclerosis (PRMS) – It is one of the form of multiple sclerosis, where the disease progresses from the initial attack. It has a distinct symptom that can be seen easily.
Malignant multiple sclerosis- It is also known as Marburg variant multiple sclerosis, which is a severe form of the disease. It is also rare and an aggressive form of the disease. It can even lead to significant disability or
even death, often within few weeks or months after the initial attack.
Chronic progressive multiple sclerosis- It is not an exact type of multiple sclerosis, but it is a term given by the doctor which includes three forms of multiple sclerosis that is secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, primary progressive multiple sclerosis or progressive relapsing multiple sclerosis.
In conclusion, if there appears any symptoms of multiple sclerosis, immediately see a doctor. The doctor will observe the symptom and would come to know which type of multiple sclerosis exists. This would be helpful for him to prescribe medicines. Never ignore the symptoms of multiple sclerosis; it can lead to serious complication that could be even life-threatening.
